There is something about music that stirs the soul and connects us all. It transcends barriers: it’s the universal language of our planet.

Saturday October 17th was a fine day for a wedding… and, a quiet little forest serenade on acoustic guitar.

Jennifer + Mike spent countless summers at neighbouring camps and over time their friendship evolved into something much deeper. These are two individuals with a tonne in common: they’re both teachers. They both play guitar. They love indie-folk music. The outdoors. They appreciate art. But mostly they are 100% in love with each other.

We asked Jen + Mike how they felt about bringing their guitar along to the photo session. It was, after all, something special that united them. More than just creating images that document the poignant moments of the day, we wanted to draw inspiration from the music they loved to play, a medium that meant the world to them. And so we did.

Jen + Mike: we thank you for letting us share this glimpse into your lives. You were cautious and thoughtful in carefully selecting your photographer. We remember this well. So happy you chose Bliss; we were thrilled to tag-along on this momentous day. Wishing you a lifetime of happiness… It’s our hope that when you look back on your wedding photographs, 10, 20 even 30 years from now, you’ll smile so earnestly at how beautiful you were and how much fun you had. Keep that music alive!

Sam & Alvi

Inspiration + Ideas: Stillmotion’s Y Experience

Sam: “So Alvi, you’re back (thank goodness!).  What was the single most meaningful take-away from your Stillmotion workshop?”
Alvi: “You’re asking me this at 11:30 at night?!  Sam, I’m bagged.  Go to sleep.”
Sam  ”Nuh-uh.  If we don’t do this now it won’t happen!  You have a wedding tomorrow and a pile of editing to do.  So spill!!!! [...]

And be grateful I’m typing.  You know what you say, ‘you gots good english.’”

****moment of silence****followed by “the look”****submission and then caving!!!****

Alvi:  ”Wow.  So much, really.  It was reinforced that shooting a wedding is more than just taking images and setting up the shots.  It is actually about WHY am I shooting things this way and not that way; what does this picture mean and represent to the couple when they’ll see it?  Why do I think this image will matter? Will it trigger the memories authentically?”

Sam:  “Whoa.  That’s deep.  Ok let’s get back to the regular format cuz it’s hard to be succinct with you!”

Alvi:  “Don’t use big words on me, Sam!”

*****************************************************************************************************************************************************

It’s been a whirlwind 10 days… with just 7 hours spent back on TBay soil, in between our Rockies trip and an event I had been anticipating since the spring:  Stillmotion’s “Y” Experience.

This week was all about professional development and growth.  Nine of us photographers from as far south as Miami and as far west as Calgary humbly assembled in the presence of renowned international photographers, Amina Moreau and Justin Demers (Stillmotion) at their Mississauga studio.  The emphasis was not so much about mechanics or cool new technology; it was more as about delving deep into why we do what we do as photographers.

This question of *why* became the central theme for all of us — a psychological quest for the deeper meaning behind our craft and the images we shoot.  It is true that anyone can click a button on a camera.  But to connect the dots and build a storyline takes time, effort and care. The entire concept of *why* will continue to stay with us at Bliss, as it’s virtually impossible to slide in a direction of complacency or humdrum after cracking open the box, staring ourselves in the mirror and asking *why* do we do what we do.  Not possible to go backwards.

Having said that, this is why we will be making an even greater effort to understand our clients.  How did you meet?  Why did you fall in love?  What was that moment like?  What are your values?  In the end, if we can connect to the deeper stuff it will transcend into your photographs.  After all, our job is to document a pivotal piece of history for you.  Something to show your children and grandchildren. Photos that evoke the raw emotion of your day.  This is not a responsibility we take lightly.

So we’re in full-on growth mode at Bliss.  If you are on this journey with us we are so blessed and want to tell you to fasten your seatbelts, cuz it’s gonna be quite the ride!

Below are a smattering of shots taken throughout the day.  There is nothing overtly artistic here… just a handful of photogs honing their craft and muttering under their breath WHY.

banff_blog-0012Greetings from our loft at Brewsters Mountain Lodge in Banff National Park, Alberta.  Alvi and I have left the daily grind back home and are here with only three goals in mind: (a) reconnecting as a couple with no kids in tow, (b) restoring our souls by getting close to nature and (c) hiking until our legs beg for mercy.  So far, so good — I would say!

Our arrival in Calgary on Wednesday was quite the treat.  We were greeted with a mixed bag of good ol’ Canadian weather.  And in typical Calgary fashion, it seemed to flip-flop every 15 minutes.  Whilst headed to Banff and proceeding to get very lost thanks to the incredibly helpful road signage (could finding highway 1 BE any more difficult????!), we encountered sun, sleet, hail, blizzard-like conditions followed by rain.  Needless to say I was relieved to have been so thorough in packing for all conditions.

Yesterday we spent the night in Lake Louise and decided we were going to *take it easy* in terms of the hiking/climbing itinerary. Now understand that my life-long passion is to get to the Himalayas and the Andes and scale some big mountains {in fact, this October I was supposed to be climbing Island Peak in Nepal… a trip that had been booked 2 years earlier and then cancelled following the start of the recession} .  So while I was battling with a decent bout of mountain fever {wanting to climb to the top of everything we saw}, Alvi’s mantra was “let’s pace ourselves as I have a new heart and am outta shape!”  {says the man post-open-heart surgery by only 4 months}.  So we struck a balance and opted for a technically easy but lengthy climb to the top of the Glacier of Six Plains.

What a hike, indeed!  I was totally in my element and the trail was not crowded at all.  There were a few times when we needed to stop and catch our breath (both of us); breathing heavy from the altitude gain and also from the steady climb uphill.  But Alvi was a trooper.  Only once did he have to reason with my level of sanity when I begged to veer off the beaten path and climb what looked like a perfectly achievable route to the top of one of the neighbouring mountains.  {Upon our return while caught in the middle of a snowstorm I conceded that it would NOT have been one of my finest intelligent decisions!}

We had homemade soup and bread along with a kick-ass bottle of wine {thanks to me for lugging the bottle} at the top in a quaint little teahouse which we learned was just 5 days away from shutting down for the season.  Lucky us!!  And then on our descent we ran into the nicest people who had been caught in the storm in their canoe on Lake Louise.  Olivier and Florence, French nationals living in Manitoba, had just managed to pull themselves and their heavy canoe out of the water and were proceeding to carry said canoe in the storm back to their vehicle about 2 clicks away.

In true Alvi-fashion, he picked up Florence’s end of the impossible-to-portage-canoe {given its design} and trek it with Olivier back to the car while Florence and I chittered away about our lives and the impossible-to-predict weather.  You never know who you might meet in life; this young couple was so sweet and if they ever do find themselves in Thunder Bay and would like to renew their vows we’d be happy to document it for them!  I’m still blown away that they were married last year in an igloo Olivier built himself.

So on the agenda today is a 4-hour trail ride through Spray Valley and dinner at an Italian restaurant here in Banff.  Cannot WAIT!  We’ll chat later.

*Note* This little holiday is sponsored with the incredible support from Gramma Dawn and Grampa Mike; both of whom have given up their Thanksgiving to accommodate our busy little munchkins.  Thank you so much, Mom and Dad!  We owe you big time.

Is there anybody else out there that WORSHIPS fall? I mean, flat-out REVERES this season?? Because we sure do. October is the NEW SEPTEMBER, in case you didn’t get the bulletin. Although this post is actually dedicated to our most recent wedded Bliss clients {insert — Jen + Anthony}, we thought it’d be prudent to let you in on all the budding excitement. We’ll keep you in suspense over J + A’s sneak peek pics until the end of the post. I know, evil.

Summer Client Wrap-up

We are working feverishly to edit the thousands of shots taken throughout the busy summer wedding season.  If you are a client still waiting on your final product, we thank you for your patience.  Every image is meticulously processed in an effort to match that visual you have in your head, from removing crows feet and tan lines to colour correcting and ultimately removing unwanted wedding crashers (!). We’ve received rave reviews about our new, custom large-format books and cannot wait to get yours into your hands.  Remember that these are the images you will have for the rest of your life // so thank you for letting us do our thing.

Two Jen’s

October brings us two beautiful brides named Jennifer — we are ecstatic to be shooting these fall weddings as the imagery is breathtaking thanks to ideal lighting conditions and Thunder Bay’s stunning autumn foliage.  Scroll down and you can enjoy a glimpse at some of the shots from Jennifer + Anthony’s October 3rd wedding.

Rocky Mountain Bound

Bliss Pictures is heading to Banff, Alberta later this week for an injection of mountain air and photographic inspiration.  We are leaving the kids with the parentals (thank you Gramma + Grampa) and investing some time in each other.  And here is some unsolicited advice: as newlyweds or newly engaged, make time for your relationship!  It’s too easy to get caught up in the daily grind.

The Y-Experience with Still Motion

Alvis is returning for his second round of professional development with Amina and Justin at Stillmotion next week.  He is stoked and humbled to be learning from two such inspired and revered professionals and hopes to soak up all that he can during these three exclusive days in Toronto.

Chamber of Commerce Wedding Wishes Show

Mark your calendars, people: Sunday, November 8th, from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Valhalla Inn Ballroom.  Bliss will be there with BELLS ON this year.  We are honoured to be included in the Chamber’s grand prize giveaway and are creating an exclusive package for one lucky bride and groom. Drop by the booth and tell us about your special plans!

Jennifer + Anthony:  Highschool Sweethearts

Well, Saturday, October 3rd dawned cold and drizzly.  Ok, who are we kidding: make that frigid and pouring.  But Anthony was on it: this is one organized groom!  At 7:15 am, a calm-sounding voice proceeded to tell us the original outdoor venue of Monty Park had been changed to graciously accommodate mother nature… and that the ceremony was to be held at the Italian Hall.

And yet in spite of the weather, our congenial wedding party kept their sense of humour and made use of matching umbrellas (this wedding season’s hippest new prop!) during our photo shoot.  The day was full of poignant moments: laughter, tears during the vows (Jen your mom’s mistiness nearly made me lose it), a touching father/daughter dance and gratitude (we are moved beyond belief by your lovely note, J + A….thank you).  Jennifer and Anthony, in the next day we will be posting a proper sneak peak.  So this is just a sneak, sneak peak. It’s an “S.P” that’s how brief it is!  We need a day or so to go through the myriad of shots, select a smattering that represent you best and then process.  But do check back before Wednesday!
