Well, we did it folks.  In spite of two incessantly sick kids, zero sleep and a pile of deadlines lurking at our doorstep, we somehow pulled off a wedding show, albeit not without a few hiccups (Thunder Bay Wedding Show at the Da Vinci, 11 am – 4 pm today).

Bliss Pics hosted a seminar entitled, “Photography 101 for the Vogue Bride”… what a gong show that was.  First laptop didn’t work as the plug-in converter we brought for our MAC laptop was meant for the OLD MAC laptop…. 14 minutes later following a quick trip home (where I will not deny possibly cutting off a driver or two to make it back in time)… OLD MAC laptop is in hand with correct converter plug-in.  All is well; except that the flashstick had saved the Power Point in some ODP format ($&#@!) and thus would not read it.

Moving on to laptop # THREE!!!!  Now we’re golden, or so I thought.  But then for some reason the photos that were built into the presentation were missing save for 2.  Ug.

However, sincere thanks to those of you who attended and humoured me as I did the tap-dance sans photos.

Only other issue which actually drew blood (literally) was our TV monitor.  It was supposed to be on a platform raised about 8 inches off the table and go figure, the platform we had built decided to be wobbly thus putting the 42″ unit at risk.  Out come drill bits and a hammer, etc, and it was just messy folks.  Poor Alvi’s bleeding all over the joint.

Enough whining.

The show was a real success, we thought.  Maverick did a super job organizing it.  We were so impressed with the format — at any given point there was something to be offered for everyone; from seminars to fashion shows to hair shows.  Pretty good turn-out, too.

And now a drumroll, please!!!!!

Following verification from our Chief Blogging Officer, 5-year old Piper Plavins, we have drawn a name for a our Trash the Dress photo shoot giveaway.  We are pleased to offer this wickedly cool freebie to <insert dramatic fanfare> Ashley Stachowich.   Ashley and her fiancé Kevin Budowski are getting married August 6th, 2010.  Way to go, Ashley!  We look forward to a bodaciously bold photo shoot with you following your wedding date next year.

In case you’re a lurker just randomly checking out the blog and you missed today’s show, we would be remiss without formally announcing our Spring Bling early booking Promo.  Book your photography or Fusion photography/cinematography package with Bliss before the first day of summer and enjoy an overnight stay with breakfast at Thunder Bay’s renowned White Fox Inn.

We would like to extend a ginormous shout-out to Krista & Dan Hansen of Eleven-Seventeen for all their hard work in redesigning our simple, clean-lines logo (we think its rather nifty) and for the consult on putting the booth together.  Krista; although it was not quite the masterpiece we had envisioned, that punchy orange curtain was still pretty spectacular!

Hated your wedding photos? Introducing “Déjà Vu!”

Every once in awhile we run into a couple just bemoaning their wedding photos.  And funnily enough, we can relate!  Quick sidebar here… My wife and I were married on a beach in Costa Rica nearly 7 blissful years ago (I didn’t just put that in for effect, there ya go, honey!).  At the time, we [...]

Now is this the best cake-cutting shot?!

At the time, we did the best we could to line up a photographer sight unseen over the internet and the pickings were slim to say the least for a number of reasons.  (Yes, we could have flown someone local down but we wanted to support the economy there and thought we would end up with something more authentic by hiring from within.)

Unfortunately the photos were pretty flat, rather “safe” and to be quite honest, downright boring.  They did not capture the intimacy of our 12-person elopement, nor did they do any justice to the incredible nirvana-like setting of the Guanacaste Beach.  As a result, we literally have no wedding photos up in our house, save for one taken later at our reception back in Ottawa.

Ok I’m back.  So for the longest time when we would encounter folks in a similar predicament our only option was to genuinely commiserate… inferring that yes, there’s no dress rehearsal for those magic moments, and in theory (!) we only get married once, etc.  All this led us to do a wee bit of research and we decided at Bliss that we needed to be able to offer something to these unsatisfied married couples.

So, if this is you: utterly disappointed/uninspired by your original wedding photos, now’s the chance to don that lovely dress again, dig out that tux (or go see Mr. J’s), and sign yourself up for the new Déjà Vu Package at Bliss Pictures!

$700 gets you:

  • 4 hours coverage at multiple locations (we help  you choose!)
  • a make-up artist
  • all images hand-polished on CD
  • exclusive rights to all your photos
  • a contemporary, magazine-stye “new” wedding album

Tire-kickers beware.  This package is only available as an actual do-over from your original wedding shots and we’ll definitely want to see them to gain a clear understanding of what you DON’T want.  Please do not call us enquiring about the scope and price of this package as it is not available as a stand-alone for your original wedding day photography package.

Cinevate in action.

Who says Friday the 13th isn’t lucky?

As my luck would have it, got a call from the best graphics agency in town, Eleven-Seventeen, wondering if I would have time to take some last minute shots at a local firm called Cinevate. “Would I?!”, I exclaimed.  Damn straight!

Now Cinevate may not be on your radar screen, but if you’re a budding cinematographer or have anything remotely to do with the world behind a camera (and you have not been living under a rock), then you would know that this Thunder Bay company has a stellar product that is taking our industry by storm.  I’ve been a quiet fan of Cinevate for years; even pondered bugging them for a job when we first moved up from Ottawa…thinking my IT background and penchant for photography could lend itself nicely to their team.

Yada yada yada. Cinevate is participating in one HUGE trade-show in Las Vegas next month.  It’s the National Association of Broadcasters flagship, “who’s-who-in-the-world-of-broadcasting-show” and hopefully the shots I humbly took today will do them the justice they deserve.

But if Krista and Dan at Eleven-Seventeen have anything to do with it, I’m sure theirs will be the slickest, edgiest, funkiest booth at the show.

Note: not to be a hypocrite, while I don’t yet utilize Cinevate’s tool (key word: yet), I’m still allowed to be a fan and have been following their work for quite some time.

Check out their work:

Jason: That is exciting news! Congratulations to you. Cinevate is an awesome place and Dennis and the staff are great to deal with. They are going to make a huge splash at NAB. Good job Alvis. 03.14.2009

admin: Thanks Jason. Great-looking site by the way. Looks like you have some hip, gifted photographers at your disposal! 03.14.2009

Alright.  Who’s in charge of the weather, people?  Like really.  REALLY.  Forecast is calling for 25-40 cm of the white stuff and we are just one week away from Spring.  Methinks someone is trying to torture us.  To test the depth of our thick-skinned Canadian souls.  To question the very fabric of our good-natured personalities.

And to those of you currently lying on a beach in some pseudo nirvana-like all-inclusive (you know who you are), we say definitively, unabashedly, “yes, we are jealous.”

Is it not the ultimate coup to fortuitously schedule your va-cay during one of the biggest dumpings of the year?  You people can all bite me!

This chair is where I want to be.  Right now.  And no, Alvi; we are not buying a snowblower tonight.  That is just playing with the fates.

How Procrastination Sometimes Begets Stress…er, I mean Success!

As I stared at the infinite number of piles on my desk at work today, I realized that the length of time I held my gaze was directly correlated with the intensity of tingling brought on by that old familiar feeling…stress!

Oh procrastination.  Oh you sweet, all-encompassing phenomenon.  Where would I be without you?  Would I be less stressed?  Possibly.  Or would I…?

Pondering this question has led me to reflect on the years I have spent perfecting the art thereof.  Even now, at near 10 pm which is prime-time editing for me, I sit comfortably in my jammies choosing to write about procrastination while the call from my hard drive is nothing short of deafening.  It’s saying…”Open me!”  ”Open me, you crazy woman!  What are you waiting for, you useless twit!?”

Thanks to procrastination, I have foolishly (or not) come to believe that I do my best work under pressure.  Now is this just a load of hogwash, or what?  How can we possibly be expected to perform at our most optimal when there is a metaphorical gun pointing to our heads?  I sure don’t have the answer, but somehow, someway, in my little world procrastination has very rarely let me down.

So here’s a toast to you… you scheming little devil… procrastination, my friend, my nemesis, my sometimes great success.  Zum wohl!
