The countdown is on as K.C. and Adrian will attest: just 2 weeks until their Big Day arrives! This couple has some of the grooviest wedding ideas we have heard to date — all stemming from a desire to veer clear of the conventional. We cannot WAIT to participate in their wedding on August 7th. There are some crazy things in store — including a possible “Trash the Dress” shoot later that night. We likey!!!

We caught up with K.C. and Adrian just the other day, as they crossed T’s and dotted I’s with their wedding planner extraordinaire, Bethanie Foster.  For us, it was important that their engagement pictures reflect their outgoing personalities and the wonderful friendship they share.  K.C. + A, enjoy this sneak peek and know we are excited <more like psyched!> to partake in your upcoming wedding day.  I think we’ll whisper gently in mother nature’s ear to see if she can rustle up some actual SUMMER weather for you.

Megan + Steve: {can you please adopt us into your clan?!}

Saturday July 18th, 2009: Megan + Steve exchange vows in front of 220 adoring fans.  And somewhere between the glimpse of a groomsmen’s skull underpants <ok, not so much a glimpse…. more like a full-on visual!> and the putting up with random territorial pigeons… we, too, joined the ranks of their extensive fan club!

What a crazy day.  CRAZY — I tell you!  Destined to be action-packed from the get-go, it soon became quite obvious that we were having just as much fun as them.  As their official photographer / cinematographers, our role was to ensure an authentic and esthetically beautiful interpretation of their day via still and moving images.  The challenge we faced was the tight turn-around time following their ceremony at the Valhalla and the reception that ensued shortly thereafter: 1.5 hours.  That’s right: 1.5 hours. Needless to say we knew we had our work cut out for us (especially since these two cool cats and their hilarious wedding party kept giving us such amazing camera fodder!).

Yet somehow, someway, we managed to pull it off — including a visit to not one, but two killer locations.  Megan and Steve; you were such good sports.  And although I could have done without the incessant pigeon flappings (while this just rolled off Megan’s back…. she kept telling us “Guys, I’ve worked in a grain elevator before.  I’m cool.  It’s all good”); the overall happy madness of the day was unsurpassed.  If you’d like to adopt us into your posse, we’d be most pleased to accept.

Special thanks to the rockin’ team of our cinematographers Marty and Benoit (the latter of whom, might I add, took quite the cajoling with such grace and humour!!) for lending us their film expertise throughout the day.

Hope you enjoy this sneak peak of their incredible day.  To the Lipinski’s: we were so honoured to have participated and cannot wait to hear how your next major endeavour works out… <most definitely curious about your plans for the dress, Megan!>

A Public Service Message: Keeping It Real {fresh, fun, funky!}

Baker-1126-2It is on.  I mean, “on!”  Wedding season is in full swing and Alvis is back — version 2.0 going strong.  With his newfound energy (trumpeted by the audible ticking of the replaced valve), we are eager to roll up our sleeves and “bring it” for another intense summer of fresh, fun and funky.

This little public service message is dedicated to all of our 2009 couples we’ve yet to shoot <that expression never gets old>…  As you gear up for one of the most momentous days of your life, we hope you’ll keep these few simple mantras top of mind.  Not only will it ensure you maximum satisfaction, it will also guarantee that you keep perspective amidst all the chaos.  We know you did not ask for this unsolicited advice, but we shamelessly cannot help it.

  • Don’t sweat the small stuff.  Keep the big picture in focus!
  • Savour each moment because it’ll fly in the blink of an eye.
  • Let yourself go during the photography shoot.  Have fun, be goofy, be serious, be romantic, be real.
  • Take note of your biggest fans who’ve travelled long to be with you.  Spend time with them.
  • Don’t be ruled by your watch.  If you are running a tad late, trust us on this, everyone will get over it.
  • Shelf the list.  Go with the flow.  All the months of planning will come together just as they should.
  • Hug your parents.  This is a huge day for them.  They are gaining and letting go all at the same time.
  • Be natural!  If your hair falls out of place; if your lipstick wears off; if your tie mysteriously ends up on the chair… it’s OK!

Kim Haluczak: Thanks for the tips Alvis! Definitely things for Matt and I to remember as September 12th is quickly creeping up on us! 07.23.2009

Bethanie: Great list Alvis. Of course as the official list maker and schedule follower I must suggest someone to keep you on track so you can enjoy every moment as it happens! This is your day to celebrate and you worked hard to get here. Rain helps the flowers grow so don't let it get you down. White fabric never stays white so clean up on the dance floor. 07.27.2009

gameronline: Thanks for the good read! I dont have much to do sitting here lonely at work and this kept me amused for a a bit. I have a gameronline site at when you have some time! 08.16.2009

How to entertain kids {when the waters of West Loon Lake are choppy}.

It was 4:00 pm when our car pulled up.  Two kids + several piles of beach shoes + a few changes of clothes + one birthday gift + diapers, comfort items, sunscreen. It was 4:00 pm when our car pulled up.  Two kids + several piles of beach shoes + a few changes of clothes + one birthday gift + diapers, comfort items, sunscreen. Got ‘em all.  Camera equipment?  Check.  One cheerful dad displaying long overdue elation at being given the medical green light to finally drive again?  Yup.  Got him, too.

The conversation went something like this:

Piper to Mommy, “<huge emphatic GASP> Mommy!  There’s a bouncy castle!”

Mommy to Piper, “Yes I see that dear.  Do you feel like bouncing?”

Mommy to Piper, “Piper?  Come help me carry your sister’s Iggle Piggle.  Piper?  Piper?  Hellllooooooo?”

And… they’re off!

So began our afternoon to celebrate little Alisha’s 3rd birthday with good friends and family.  The food was exceptional as usual. I’m always in awe at the level of gourmet cooking that takes place at a *camp*; though I should hardly be surprised given Ron + Lisa’s chosen career path!  The only disappointment was the random bouts of cloudy/cool we had to contend with.  It would seem the good times with the jet ski would have to wait.

But back to the bouncy castle!  These things ROCK.  And let me tell you I do believe this was, quite legitimately, the MOST amount of exercise I’ve had in some time.  The pictures speak for themselves.  Thanks, Harriet, for having us!  Thanks Ron + Lisa!  Great to see you and the kids, Dyan!

Beauty: It’s like they say. {Skin Deep}

Always was an advocate for the tried, tested and true proverb; “Beauty is only skin deep.”  We all know that true beauty goes well beyond the surface.  And yet in my deliberate quest for a pick-me-up, I decided to FINALLY try out a friend’s new-ish business this afternoon.  I just cannot contain my enthusiasm.  I’m [...]

I’m so impressed I had to blog about it!

Angela Romeo opened Luminous Laser & Med Spa two years ago this fall and I can say I have definitely seen her in her element. While lying peacefully in her elegantly appointed treatment room, the soothing sound of something nature-like and ethereal filled me with a sense of calm.  We chittered away about this and that and then she got straight down to business and whipped out this wicked ‘Machine.’  I confess to have been fully intimidated on first glance.  Yet as it stripped away my my tired looking skin I couldn’t help but get excited about its promise of a soft, radiant glow.  And no, it did not hurt one iota (always my first question in a scenario where I have no control!)

And then came the ‘Other Machine’.

Let’s just say that ‘Other Machine’ and I did not bond like the first one.  I believe this was the phototherapy segment to my treatment.  Its laser worked tirelessly seeking out the enemy: broken capillaries, sun spots and redness.  It stands to reason that I’m not quite sure how I made it through the delivery of two children… I’m sure Angela is still giggling at my complete and total floppiness on the table!  It actually did not really hurt at all; it was more the nature of the *zap* followed by its accompanying light that gave me a wee jolt.  But Angela was a true professional.  I took note of her ability to keep me chatting away about endless other subjects so as not to hone in on the task at hand. Nicely done, Ange.  Very subtle!

Fast forward to a wonderful day spent chasing kids and puttering around the yard; I’m now wide awake and reflecting on this awesome experience I had today at Luminous.  I can’t help but think if I was a bride this would be at the top of my *beautification* list in the months leading up to the Big Day.  I’ll be having additional treatments with Angela and will let you how the progress is shaping up.  I found it to be extremely well priced and it has completely shattered the myth I bought into, that this type of *pampering* was targeted only for the affluent and superficial.  Definitely not the case.

And dare I say, I think I’m glowing!  Thanks, Angela.

You can check out all her offerings at LuminousLaser.
