Hello loyal blogstalkers {and welcome to any new visitors}.  After a several week hiatus we are back… well, back in the virtual sense. Today’s report is coming to you direct from YYZ enroute home to YQT!  The trip to Fort McMurray/Edmonton was fabulous… did a world of good I’m happy to report.  In random order, here is a quick catch-up…

Being M.I.A. [Where did we go??]

There comes a time in everyone’s life when “regrouping” is — in the words of homemaker icon, Martha Stewart — a “Good Thing.” So the past few weeks were all about regrouping.  Amidst the chaos of our 6-wedding August, life happened, constituting a need to regroup.  Alvi was called back home to Sudbury for a family funeral and I was pulled away out west on other business.  Funny how life works… a last-minute wedding cancellation we were bemoaning a few months ago ultimately ensured we were available and able to participate in both important situations.  It is so true what they say, “everything happens for a reason.”

This time we spent apart, him in the ‘Bury and me in Alberta, gave us each a chance to step back and reflect on where we’re heading both as a family and in the context of this budding boutique business we call Bliss.  In the spirit of transparency, I thought I’d share some of our observations with you. Take it or leave it — but it comes from the heart.

Observations from the Deck

Observation #1)  We are going to have to hire additional staff for Bliss.  The past two years have seen rampant growth, and while that is really awesome, we’ve found it a challenge to keep up with demands.  So like it or not, we’re taking the plunge and looking for some assistance.  Stay tuned for future posts as we introduce you to some fresh new faces of Bliss.

Observation #2)  Life is far too short to work every single weekend every summer that comes along.  For this reason, we will be carving out the appropriate amount of weekends *off* from May through October to ensure that we can build in time as a family. As one of our clients recently put it, “isn’t that really what life is all about?  Spending time with the family?”  We’ll be better for it; our kids will be better for it; our clients will be better off, since we’ll be so balanced and rested!!!

Observation #3) Countdown tickers rock.  57 days ago I installed one on our splash page announcing our upcoming Spring Bling Promo.  Thanks to the ticker’s incessant ticking, I am now aware that tomorrow is THE day!!!  Stay tuned for the big promo announcement.

Observation #4) Direct advice from near strangers is sometimes more meaningful than from those who are closest to the action. My time in Fort McMurray was spent with a national focus group where we surmised and strategized all things life insurance-related {I’m currently President of a family-run insurance practice}.  Ordinarily, this Focus Group is comprised of all the *older folk*, including my favourite partner/father: dad.  But this time around, again… for whatever reason… it was decided that I should attend.  Let’s call it fate.  I’m ever so grateful as it gave me some much-needed perspective and I now have a game-plan in place. Funny how Bliss Pictures made it to the agenda in a room full of insurance-legends.  Thank you to Randy, Jim, Mike and Gord for your candour and pointed advice. {See Observation #1).

Observation #5) We all have the power to achieve greatness.  Hard to believe this little nugget comes out of a tour of the Suncor Oil Sands. Now understand that I never pretend to be anything other than a *girlie-girl*.  So imagine my excitement when I learned we’d be spending 4 hours on a bus touring through an oil plant up in northern Fort McMurray.  First thought: Yippee. Second thought: Charge up the iPod!  Yet in a dramatic twist I was quite blown away.  The vision that had to go into planning an organization and infrastructure of that magnitude must have been nothing short of genius.  The end result?  If some random human being can dream that big, why can’t we all?

On “Time” + “Where it Goes”

How is it possible that summer is virtually over?  How is it possible that this little company has grown so dramatically in the last two years? How is it possible that tomorrow our little girl starts her full-time school career in grade one?  How can it be that we’ve been in Thunder Bay more than five years?  How can it be that Alvi and I have been together 11 years?  How on earth have I arrived at the point in time where I am soon done with changing diapers forever?  Where have all the years gone???!!!

I am coming to learn that there are only two things we ultimately have control over in life: the first is our own attitude and perspective on all that happens in life; and the second is how we choose to spend our time.  As a direct reaction to realizing that I’ve already lived 35 years on this planet, I will henceforth be extremely picky with how I spend my time.

People I Cannot Wait to See

A picture will always make a post more interesting but alas I am limited to this MAC’s overloaded hard-drive.  This is what I’ve got… couple of wee pics of the people waiting for me when I get home.

So I’m waiting for Mr. Man to come home from his latest wedding.  He’s been commissioned to do Cinema for clients Stef + Kyle who were married today [must be one rockin' celebration as its nearly 2 am and he's still MIA!]. As is the usual practice I like to get the download when he returns home, and anyone who is a regular lurker knows I am a total insomniac.  Having crossed everything off today’s TO DO list, I’ve spent the last hour in complete awe.  The direct result of cruising the Net and coming across some rad new media stuff.

I had heard that the arts community is a-buzz these days with some cutting edge projection media concepts and I have to admit I can see why.  My background is music <HBMus from good ol’ Lakehead U> so this meshing of music, architecture and funky images appeals to every artsy bone in my body. This is just about the coolest thing I’ve seen in ages.  Imagine actually standing inside this urban setting — if you ask me it would be an impact of the highest magnitude!

To give further context to what you will see from this company called Nuformer, here’s how they describe their offerings:

“Impressive and stylish projections on buildings, a renewing way of communicating. For those who want to carry out a message in a striking and visually attractive way with guaranteed exposure: 3D Projection on buildings is the communication tool of 2009, and what an impact! NuFormer Digital Media develops high-skill 3D video mapping projections. These 3D projections will be custom-made to fit any specific building and will be exposed by a battery of powerful projectors.”

But everyone’s a critic.  Form your own opinion, if you dare.

Ian Benninghaus: I do believe that "Mr. Man" did in fact have a good time at Steph and Kyle's wedding last night as I was the fellow who bartended it. It was a rockin' celebration and I can attest he did behave himself and is obviously a consummate professional as he conducted himself as such even while in the midst of some highly intoxicated party goer's. Lovely work on this site as well as the portfolio shots. Very, very well done and it is a crying shame that I did not know to contact you(s) when I was married in 2006. From what I have seen on this site and from my conversation with Alvis last night, I can honestly say that the next time someone asks me "Who do I go to for shooting my wedding?", I am most definitely going to refer them to BlissPictures. Absolutely stunning work by a gentleman who obviously knows his stuff and takes pride in his work. Cheers, Ian Benninghaus 08.16.2009

admin: Hi Ian! Wow; your effusive words are making my night! We are not worthy!! Thanks for letting me know he was on his best behaviour. It is important. LOL. We just checked out your flickr account and right back at ya..... I'm not sure we could take a decent nature shot if we tried. Gorgeous stuff... not sure I could even pick a fave as they are all esthetically stunning. Alvi and I both appreciate the environment we live in but rarely do we actually document its raw beauty on film. And yes we are the typical wedding photography co. that has nary a wedding photo of our own big day in site. Ah the irony. Thanks again and we appreciate your taking the time to visit! 08.16.2009

Hello world.  Another day, another night of insomnia… guess the Blog is happy!  Were it not for insomnia, methinks this young blog — just in its infancy — would go completely malnourished.

A Wee Rant

It’s been quite the day.  Allow me to share as a form of *venting*.  For starters, our new wedding books arrived.  We decided to move our business to a new company and have really been quite pleased thus far.  In particular, we’ve been waiting on books for some VERY patient clients who in turn have been waiting a LONG time to receive them.  Imagine my delight upon opening the FedEx package to behold this 14 x 20 book… to see the beautiful images staring up at me… to feel the quality of the 206gsm coated paper… to drink in the velum inserts… Ah so lovely indeed.  Now if you will, imagine my horror upon flipping the book over only to discover the wedding date was wrong.  How could this happen????  How could it have been missed????

Major <sigh>.  On the bright side, our clients will get to enjoy an extra book and hopefully can overlook the misprinted date.  The updated/corrected version is already back in the queue.  Oh human error.  You really could not stay away, could you?

Post-Processing Updates – Cinema Clients

We acknowledge that we are behind.  We thank you for your patience as we rebuild both machines in an effort to rid ourselves of whatever issues are causing the chinks in the armour.  The issue comes into play during the burn of the DVD and we are frantically working to rectify it.

A Word to Meghan + Paul

Hey guys.  Hope married life is treating you well!  Your wedding was incredible and we cannot wait to share a sneak peek of the images we captured.  Please bear with us… your turn is coming!  Hopefully we’ll have some teasers posted early next week.  In the meantime we thank you, Matthew for sending us this neato shot courtesy of your mobile phone.  I’m posting it just ‘cuz I like it. So there!

Epiphanies

So tonight I had to drive Piper out to her friend’s camp on Lac de Mille Lac.  It’s a near 2 hours there and obviously the same back. The time I spent on my return gave me a much-needed opportunity to reflect on life and I will share the following epiphanies that floated into my brain:

  1. I need to pay more attention to the gas gage.  Running out of gas with no cell phone service and a baby in the backseat would not have been one of my finer moments.  ’Twas a bit of a nail biter, folks.  I felt like Kramer on Seinfeld as he pushes the limits of Seinfeld’s caddy to see how long it will last on an empty tank of gas.  Thank you Gary’s Esso for existing!!!
  2. Life is short and it’s moving way quickly.
  3. Raising two little girls = tremendous honour/major responsibility/ongoing drama/lots of hair accessories.
  4. How blessed are we if we have our health.  No more scares, thank you very much.
  5. Driving behind a transport on 11/17 is a good strategy to avoid moose at night.  Let the rig take it!
  6. How amazing is it that at this very moment someone is being born?  Probably every second if you look at it globally.
  7. Isn’t it way cool that Row,Row,Row Your Boat and Twinkle, Twinkle have been around forever?
  8. People should really buy their life insurance when the going is good.  I wish the world knew this.
  9. The sound of an 18-month old saying “Mummy” as she falls asleep in the backseat is utter bliss.
  10. Martina McBride’s song “This One’s for the Girls” has some good life lessons in it.  Thanks, Martina.

Maggie: *NOTE* Have a close look at the danger he puts himself in! Take a look at the wood near the top rung. It is cracked almost in half! 08.14.2009

Sam: Maggie you KILL me. So I guess he should start charging for danger pay, eh? LOL. Cannot wait to post some sneak peak pics of Meghan + Paul. Hopefully Monday or Tuesday. 08.16.2009

3,785 Days of Tana + Steve [time elapsed from first date to marriage]

Now here is a woman with an eye and a brain for details.  One such detail?  Precise timing from first date to walk down the aisle {3,785 days, 20 hours, 29 minutes and 16 seconds}.  The mere fact she was able to calculate on such precision blows our minds.

And what if you are too lazy to do the math?  Alright, we cave.  They’ve been together since 1999.

Tana + Steve came into our lives nearly two years ago, and at the time of their booking I recall thinking that 2009 seemed oh-so-far-away. But somehow, time has marched on, and this past Saturday on the 8th day of the 8th month of the 2009th year — Tana + Steve got hitched. Every single aspect of their wedding was meticulously thought out, so that in fact there were no details that didn’t have some sort of special meaning.  Even their wedding date {and forever and ever… Anniversary Date!} was deliberately chosen for its close proximity to their engagement date {August 6th} and another significant number, Steve’s ‘89 Mustang.

At any rate, the day was pretty incredible and amazingly enough, the rain also held off.  The wedding party was relaxed and hip to just about everything we suggested.  And the coolest part of the day was spent at a private residence boasting the most nirvana-like Japanese garden we’ve ever laid eyes on.

Tana + Steve: thank you for being you.  !!  Thanks for entrusting us with your memories.  Thanks for hanging in there while we went through our little health scare.  We wish you a lifetime of happiness and cannot wait to hear how the next 10 years unfold!!!

Sound the trumpets!  Alert the press!  Can we get a ‘woot woot’ from someone?!!!  A wedding without rain!!!  What a concept. Really. REALLY.  Just when we were beginning to lose our last shred of faith in Mother Nature she goes and redeems herself on this blessed day: the day K.C. + Adrian hitched themselves happily together forever.  Hip-hip-hurrah!  [Forgive the dramatics but let's be frank -- the weather has sucked the big one for the vast majority of wedding days this season!]

So today was an absolute blast.  But to set the stage appropriately, let’s backtrack for a moment.  Right when we first met K.C. + Adrian, we knew they were going to be different clients to deal with.  Different good.  Veering away from all things conventional really defines them as a couple.  They have a playful almost mischievous streak about them and it foreshadowed a wedding day unlike any other.  And to be clear, it was!  From bowling in tuxes to a last-minute ditching of the original photo shoot plan; Alvis and Bethanie were kept on their toes but did not miss a beat.  It’s so true that more often than not, spontaneity can produce the best results.

K.C. + Adrian’s sense of adventure led us to Thunder Bay’s famed C.L.E. Grounds.  A quick phone call requesting permission to do said impromptu wedding shoot on site resulted in what we have come to know as “choreographed madness.”  But, madness of the coolest proportion!  A caravan of golf carts picked us up in the secure parking zone area and from there we were escorted directly onto the property where the bridal party let loose to explore their inner child.   Heaps of thanks and praise to Debbie + Rita of the C.L.E . not only for indulging us on this whimsical idea, but also for giving us front-of-line access to the rides and games [making for some really run shots and a timely arrival back at the Victoria Inn for their reception].

We hope you enjoy these few images pulled from the pile.  K.C. + Adrian — you did not disappoint.  Your wedding day was poignant and playful at the same time.  What a blast.  We were humbled to have been a part of it!  Congratulations to you both and stay tuned for more teaser shots coming your way!

Meanderings [August Rush; Something Special; On the Horizon]

Hello to our usual suspects! And if you are a drop-in guest for the first time, we welcome you and your comments… Unless you are of the *spam* variety, it’s pretty much a guarantee we’ll post whatever you have to say. [FYI, on the *spam* note, who knew starting a blog would generate so much cyberspace junk?!]

August Rush

Talk about a rush… This month we’re working with six special couples who are all Tying the Knot in their own unique ways.  And as the anticipation builds up prior to each wedding, we’re reminded why we so love to document weddings.  Reason?  Because quite simply stated, each couple has a different story to tell and their pictures will play a lifetime role in the narrative.  How’s that for pressure?!

But seriously. It’s important to us that the images we capture are not just cool and unconventional <as anyone can do that>, but that they evoke something emotional and authentic about you and your connection with each other.  This is why insist on face-to-face get-togethers — it’s our opportunity to find out how you met, why you dig him so much, what special way he lets you know he’s there for you without even uttering words… etc.  These details help frame our strategy when we prepare for your Big Day.  It’s also why we encourage you to set aside at least 3 hours for your photos session.  This gives us ample time to take all the perfunctory shots your family won’t want to miss, the funky bridal party shots and then it’s your time to shine.  Just you two… on cloud nine revelling in the magic of what just transpired.

Something Special:  It Is Coming

Oh-so-cryptic, we know.  But there is something special brewing and soon we’ll be able to share it with you.  The spirit in which “it” is intended comes from a desire to give back.  We have been blessed throughout our lives and do not want to forget the second chances that have come our way.  After noodling on just how powerful karma can be, we’ve gotten together with some allied creatives to help us give legs to our idea.  When we announce “it”, we hope you’ll jump on board.

Bliss Updates

If you are a client anxiously awaiting your proofed images or first cut DVD, we ask that you please bear with us.  We are backlogged on account of the health *issue* which derailed us for a good 9 weeks. And yet we are confident we’ll be getting caught up shortly.  Thank you for hanging in there.  Thank you for your patience.  We will make it up to you.

On the Horizon

Good times are ahead… good times.  !  Here is a smattering of what we are so stoked about.

  •  August 10th     – Bliss Pics’ new Kia Soul will be cut loose and unleashed on TBay’s streets
  • September 1st   – Spring Fling Promo Announcement.  Nifty savings for Spring 2010 bookings
  • November 8th  - Chamber of Commerce Wedding Wishes Show.  Come by the booth to say “hey”!
  • January 1st       – “It” is Coming.  Stay tuned for the big announcement.

“The Summer of Rain”… Starring Nadine + Brad [July 31, 2009]

Whoever said “Rain is good luck on your wedding day!” ?  I mean really.  REALLY.  Is this just something an eternal optimist would say whilst hiding behind intense frustration?  Does it really hold any street cred?  We wondered.  So we researched it.

Apparently, it IS good luck to have rain on one’s wedding day.  It stems from several cultures — such as Hindu — with the notion that a wet knot is harder to untie. And as we know, since marriage is often referred to as tying the knot, this then makes good sense!

So, it stands to reason if a little rain is considered Good Luck on your wedding day……then a LOT of rain must be proportionately the same? In other words…. a LOT of Good Luck?! At this point in our so-called summer, we wonder what we have done to tick mother nature off. And yet in spite of the sheets of water that poured from the heavens, our July 31st Bride and Groom kept their composure and even managed to laugh it off.

Nadine + Brad exchanged touching vows at St. Dominic’s with Father Dan at the helm, and there was scarcely a dry eye during their musically-infused service.  Our initial photo session location moved to Plan B with the weather.  Ironically it did dry up for a brief spell while the bridal party was hamming it up for the cams [the Bliss crew was commissioned for both photography and cinematography].  From there it was a mad dash back to the Victoria Inn for a rocking reception.  As usual, Maggie did an outstanding job bringing glamour and romance into the décor of the ballroom.  Flowers and bouquets brought to you by the creative stylings of our friends at The Flower Shed

Nadine + Brad: we were honoured to have worked with you on your beautiful wedding day.  We wish you a lifetime of continued love, health, prosperity and something we don’t think you’ll need — but just in case — luck!  ;)
